Burton Albion‘s search for a new manager looks to be continuing after reports that one target has turned down the role.
The Brewers are still in the process of appointing a successor to Mark Robinson, who was sacked from his post after failing to win in their opening 11 games of the League One season. Tom Hounsell has been in an interim role since then with a draw against Leyton Orient over the weekend lifting them off the bottom of the table, ahead of Shrewsbury Town.
League Two Boss Turns Down Job
According to a report from Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, Crewe Alexandra boss Lee Bell has turned down the chance to join Burton, instead opting to stick with his role at the Cheshire club.
The Railwaymen have also published a statement confirming that Bell will continue to lead the club, adding he had “turned down an official approach from another club.”
Bell had previously played over 100 matches for Albion during his career but is more linked with Crewe, having been his first club and has been coaching at Gresty Road since his retirement.
Since taking charge of the first team in 2022, the 41-year-old led The Alex to the League Two play-off final, losing to Crawley Town at Wembley and currently has the club in third place in League Two. They are on a six-game unbeaten run in League Two and are six points off Walsall in the top spot of the fourth tier.
Writer’s View
Lee Bell is doing a brilliant job at Crewe Alexandra and it would be silly to throw that away to enter a very tough relegation battle with Burton Albion. The Railwaymen do look a good bet for sealing promotion this season and have gained positive results against League Two’s top teams in Port Vale and Walsall. Burton do not look like they have a reasonable chance of staying up in League One and leaving this upward trajectory at Gresty Road would be a silly move.
