Leyton Orient Blow Hosts Away In Stormy Conditions

Leyton Orient notched up their third victory in a row as they came away from a blustery Brick Community Stadium with all three points.

Richie Wellens’ men ran out 2-0 winners against Wigan Athletic in tricky weather conditions.

First Half Action

The wind was proving to be a problem when the ball was in the air but the first real opportunity came when Orient kept the ball on the floor. Sonny Perkins produced a lovely threaded pass for Ollie O’Neill to latch onto. Home keeper Sam Tickle stood tall to deflect O’Neill’s effort away.

Wellens’ side took the lead four minutes before half-time. Dan Agyei broke free down the Orient right and his low cross was turned in at the near post by Jayden Sweeney.

Second Half

Wigan went close to an equaliser but Steven Sessegnon’s curling effort was parried by Josh Keeley and Jensen Weir couldn’t convert the rebound.

Orient could have sewn the game up when they were presented with a two-on-one breakaway after Weir left a pass short. Luckily for the Latics, Charlie Kelman fired his shot wide.

Two minutes into added time the game was sealed as a long punt from Keeley caused indecision in the home defence and Diallang Jaiyesimi nipped it to take the ball away from the advancing Tickle and roll it into an empty net.

Maloney Reacts

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney was disappointed with how his side conceded the goals that saw them lose a second game on the spin.

We conceded two really bad goals from our point of view. The second is horrific from that part of our defence.”

“The first is just as bad for me in terms of the basics of defending. It felt like there was nothing in the game, and two really poor goals were the reason why I’m standing here not talking about a 0-0.”

Writer’s View

Orient will be delighted with this victory in challenging conditions and against an opponent who is hard to break down.

Wigan in particular will be nervously looking over their shoulders at the relegation places and Maloney himself requires an improved run of form before the pressure grows on him.
