Chris Davies has revealed that Birmingham City are closing in on having two injured players return – but one will be back sooner than the other.
The Blues have been somewhat unlucky with the players they have had missing over recent weeks, with the latest casualty being full-back Alex Cochrane, who was stretchered off the pitch against Barnsley.
Squad Depth Strengthens
Birmingham will be pleased that two faces will be returning to the squad in the near future, with Scott Wright and Alfons Sampstead reaching the end of their injuries. Icelandic defender Sampstead is still yet to make a start for Birmingham City but has featured eight times in League One from the bench before injuring his ankle on international duty.
Scott Wright meanwhile has only featured seven times for the St. Andrew’s club since joining from Rangers this summer, but was pushing into the first team with appearances against Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town prior to a two-month absence caused during an injury in the warm-up to the Lincoln City match.
Speaking to Birmingham Live, Chris Davies gave an update about their conditions as the club looks to extend their six-game winning streak and overtake Wycombe Wanderers at the top of League One.
“Sampsted is building, so is Scott, but Scott is a few days behind Alfons. Hopefully Alfons will be back in training very soon and start to build up.
“It’s quite exciting because if we can get those two back over the Christmas period, with the games we’ve got, then that will be pretty much a fully fit squad.
“We’ve had a lot of illnesses, and a little injury flurry a couple of weeks ago but that seems to have died down a bit now. This was the time I wanted the squad for, Christmas, New Year, with the volume of games, so we need to have a good training week now and go again.”
Writer’s View
It is positive news for Birmingham City but it is not going to be major boosts for them. The Blues squad as it is has been on a very strong run which has seen them return to within touching distance of the top of the league and both Alfons Sampstead and Scott Wright have not been major players for Chris Davies this season. Nevertheless, it is great to have the squad depth and can allow rotation for those players like Keshi Anderson to get some needed rest.
