‘Mad’ – Phil Parkinson Reflects On Wrexham Squad Issues

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has labelled the string of injuries affecting his goalkeepers this season as “mad,” with the club forced to field four different stoppers so far.

Despite these setbacks, Wrexham remain level on points with League One leaders Wycombe Wanderers and have kept an impressive 14 clean sheets across all competitions.

Goalkeeping Crisis at Wrexham

The Reds began the season with Arthur Okonkwo as their first-choice goalkeeper, but a broken wrist in November sidelined him. His replacement, Callum Burton, stepped up impressively, only to suffer a torn thigh that required surgery and will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Veteran Mark Howard, 38, has since taken over, helping Wrexham secure a 1-0 victory over Burton Albion last weekend.

Brad Foster, signed on a short-term deal as emergency cover, became Wrexham’s fourth goalkeeper of the campaign during the midweek EFL Trophy win against Crewe Alexandra. Foster’s performance helped the Reds progress to the round of 32, with Parkinson praising the young keeper’s display:

“It’s been mad with the goalie situation. It’s bad luck but when you have injuries, you can’t let it bring you down because it happens in football and someone’s misfortune is someone else’s fortune. Brad got his chance against Crewe and handled it really well. That is what football is all about.”

Injury Updates

Parkinson confirmed that Burton’s surgery had gone well but emphasised the importance of the player focusing on recovery. Okonkwo is due to see a specialist on December 18 to assess the healing of his wrist, with the manager optimistic about his return to training. Howard, meanwhile, will continue as the first-choice keeper for Wrexham’s league matches but will be carefully managed to avoid further issues.

“Mark was really good at Burton in very difficult conditions,” Parkinson said. “But there was no way we could have played him against Crewe because when you’ve played a game quickly, it’s important that we give him time to rest and get ready for the weekend.”

Writer’s View

Wrexham’s ability to adapt and maintain their defensive resilience amidst a goalkeeper crisis is a testament to the team’s structure and discipline. Phil Parkinson’s pragmatic approach has allowed the Reds to remain competitive, while the depth of the squad has ensured no single injury derails their season. As key players recover, Wrexham look well-positioned to continue their push for League One success.
