Hull City Grab Point In Ruben Selles Opener

Hull City’s hopes of securing a much-needed victory in Ruben Selles’ first game in charge were dashed as Watford’s Rocco Vata scored a late equaliser at the MKM Stadium.

The 1-1 draw extends the Tigers’ winless streak to 12 matches but ends a run of five consecutive defeats.

Key Moments in a Tight Encounter

After a goalless first half, the match sprang to life in the second period. Giorgi Chakvetadze came close for Watford with a curling effort just over the bar, while Hull’s Joao Pedro forced a sharp save from Daniel Bachmann.

The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute in contentious circumstances. Substitute Chris Bedia deflected Marvin Mehlem’s miscued shot into the net with what appeared to be his hand, giving Hull a fortunate lead. However, their advantage was short-lived as Watford substitute Kwadwo Baah delivered a low cross that was coolly converted by Vata, scoring his first goal for the Hornets since his move from Celtic.

Selles Reflects on Promising Signs

Selles, who watched Saturday’s defeat to Blackburn from the stands after being appointed on Friday, remained positive despite the result. Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside, he said:

“We wanted to see a team that is aggressive and front-footed, and I think in a lot of moments we saw that. We controlled the game and scored the goal, but unfortunately, at the end, we conceded.”

The new manager emphasised the importance of implementing his ideas and principles, praising the players for their effort in the short time they’ve worked together.

The draw leaves Hull just one point from safety, but their failure to win since 1 October highlights the significant challenge Selles faces in reversing their fortunes. The Tigers travel to Coventry on Saturday, hoping to build on the improved performance and claim a crucial victory.

Writer’s View

Ruben Selles’ debut showed flashes of promise for Hull City, particularly in their improved organisation and intent. However, the late equaliser highlights the defensive fragility that must be addressed quickly. With the January transfer window approaching, reinforcements could be pivotal for the Tigers. For Watford, the emergence of young talent like Rocco Vata underlines the depth in their squad, giving them a solid platform for their play-off ambitions.
