Blackburn Rovers Face Premier League Competition For

Blackburn Rovers are reportedly keen on signing Wigan Athletic playmaker Thelo Aasgaard during the January transfer window.

According to Football League World, Rovers are revisiting their interest in Aasgaard after exploring a potential move for the player in the summer. They’re not alone – as we reported yesterday, Nottingham Forest is also keen on the Latics playmaker and has been watching him closely with a view to a move.

A Key Player for Wigan Athletic

Aasgaard, 22, has been a standout performer for Wigan this season, contributing five goals in 18 league appearances. Having been with the Latics since 2016, the Liverpool-born midfielder has risen through the ranks to become a pivotal part of the first team. His current contract runs until the summer of 2028, meaning Wigan are under no immediate pressure to sell and could hold out for a significant offer.

However, the stature of the clubs eyeing a move could well prompt a bidding war, and with Wigan struggling to make an impact, a war chest in January might just be too tempting to turn down.

Blackburn’s Interest

Managed by John Eustace, Blackburn Rovers are targeting Aasgaard as a potential addition to enhance their midfield creativity. The Norwegian youth international’s ability to operate in attacking roles makes him an ideal candidate for the Lancashire club as they seek to maintain their strong form, having won five consecutive league matches.

Eustace’s side is not alone in their pursuit, with Nottingham Forest also monitoring Aasgaard. However, Blackburn’s current momentum in the Championship may give them an edge in convincing the player to join their promotion campaign.

A Promising Talent

Aasgaard’s journey from Wigan’s academy to first-team prominence has been marked by consistent development. He debuted for the Latics in 2020 against Peterborough United and signed his first professional contract in January 2021. His versatility and technical ability have made him a valuable asset, with potential to further grow under the right guidance.

Writer’s View

Thelo Aasgaard represents a smart investment for Blackburn Rovers. At just 22 years old, his blend of experience and potential aligns well with the club’s ambitions. Securing his signature would add depth and creativity to their midfield, strengthening their push for Premier League promotion. With Wigan unlikely to sell cheaply, Blackburn must act decisively to outpace rivals for the talented playmaker.
