Sunderland Reveal Major January Plans: Three Players Involved

Adil Aouchiche, Abdoullah Ba, and Nazariy Rusyn are expected to leave Sunderland in January, with head coach Regis Le Bris confirming that the players need to find regular playing opportunities elsewhere.

The trio, who have struggled for game time this season, will not be included in the club’s plans for the remainder of the campaign.

Limited Involvement Highlights January Departure Plans

All three players were close to leaving the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window, but they remained at the club beyond the deadline. Their roles have been minimal since. Aouchiche has managed just two brief substitute appearances in the Championship, with his only start coming in a Carabao Cup loss to Preston. Rusyn, who also started in the same cup fixture, has made six substitute appearances but hasn’t featured since October 1. Ba’s situation is even more dire, as he has yet to play a single minute of Championship football this season.

“There are players who haven’t really been involved who could maybe leave in January,” Le Bris stated. “If you don’t have the opportunity to play, and you have an option with another club that is good for your development, then sometimes that is a good option to take and move on.”

Le Bris emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced squad, noting that while players on the bench need to be positive and engaged, it’s also crucial for those not playing regularly to seek new opportunities.

Milan Aleksic Likely to Stay

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Milan Aleksic, another summer signing, has also struggled for minutes since joining from Serbian side Radnicki. However, Le Bris believes Aleksic would benefit more from remaining at Sunderland rather than seeking a loan move, given his need to adapt to English football and language.

“For Milan, he still needs to be part of the environment here,” said Le Bris. “He is learning English and a new style of football. Spending more time with us is probably the best option for him.”

Le Bris hinted that each player’s situation will be assessed individually, with decisions tailored to their development needs.

Writer’s View

While it’s disappointing for Sunderland fans to see talented players like Aouchiche, Ba, and Rusyn struggle to make an impact, their departures could be a win-win situation for both the players and the club. A move will provide these players with much-needed game time to continue their growth, while Sunderland can focus on strengthening the squad in areas of need. Aleksic’s development approach seems sensible, as he gains valuable experience adapting to a new environment.
