Sunderland Boss Hints At Player Exit

Zak Johnson, Sunderland’s 20-year-old defender, could be heading out on loan this January, according to comments made by Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris.

With Sunderland pushing for Premier League promotion and sitting 4th in the table, opportunities for the youngster in the first team appear limited.

Johnson’s Development and Loan Prospects

Johnson has only made one senior appearance for Sunderland this season and has largely been relegated to the development squad. Le Bris recently hinted at a potential temporary move for the defender in the upcoming transfer window. Speaking to The Northern Echo, the manager said:

“We’ll see. It (a January loan move) could be an option. His reaction, the way he trains every day, is very positive. I like Zak in the training sessions, and especially when he’s a team-mate on the bench.”

“I think for him (Johnson) it’s more difficult because the back four is more consistent,” he said. “Probably, if he had been a winger, it should have been different for him. But it’s the case, and so far, he’s very positive with the team and I like his profile.”

A loan departure could prove beneficial for Johnson, providing him with much-needed game time and furthering his development. With Sunderland boasting depth in the defensive department, Johnson’s chances of breaking into the starting XI appear slim for the second half of the season.

Career So Far

Johnson has been a part of Sunderland’s setup throughout his career, progressing through their academy ranks. The Sunderland-born player made his senior debut in October 2021 during an EFL Trophy match against Manchester United’s Under-21s. Since then, he has featured twice more for the first team.

The defender signed a contract extension in 2022, which was further extended to 2026, highlighting the club’s faith in his potential. Loan spells have played a crucial role in his development so far. In 2023, Johnson joined Hartlepool United, where he made 12 appearances, followed by a successful stint at Dundalk, where he played 18 matches in the League of Ireland.

Another loan move seems likely as Sunderland weigh up their options for the January window. Finding the right club will be key to ensuring Johnson continues to progress and builds on his previous loan experiences. His next destination could play a pivotal role in shaping his career trajectory.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are preparing for their next Championship fixture, a home clash against Bristol City on Tuesday night. With promotion firmly in their sights, every game counts as they look to maintain momentum following their victory over Stoke City.
