Morecambe manager Derek Adams has called on his players to put their dismal 3-0 home loss to Grimsby Town behind them as they prepare for two crucial fixtures this week.
The Shrimps, still searching for their first home league win of the season, face a Vertu Trophy tie against Lincoln City on Tuesday before travelling to Cheltenham Town for a vital League Two clash on Saturday.
A Scathing Assessment of Grimsby Performance
Adams was unsparing in his critique of his team’s showing at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium, labelling it their worst performance of the season. The defeat, played in poor weather conditions, left Morecambe back in the League Two relegation zone.
“That was our worst performance of the season so far, especially at home,” Adams said. “We didn’t play well at all. We didn’t create many opportunities on goal, and our defending all over the pitch was poor. We didn’t make passes, we didn’t make the right choices, and the way we managed the game and defended for their goals was horrific at times.”
The manager’s frustration extended to his mid-match adjustments, as three substitutions at half-time failed to spark any improvement. Adams added, “We didn’t do a lot of the basics right today, and there was nobody in that team who played well. It was a really poor performance.”
Focus on Cheltenham and Improvement
Looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to Cheltenham Town, Adams acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but stressed the need for individual and collective improvement.
“It’s another big game for us,” Adams admitted. “We have to look at Saturday’s display and admit it wasn’t good enough. Individually, the players have to improve. They have been getting better over the last few weeks, picking up some good results, but on Saturday they let themselves down and didn’t do the basics correctly.”
Adams also emphasised the importance of his coaching team’s role in fostering player development.
“As a coaching team, we are always looking at how we can make players better and get a better understanding of the game. That’s the difficult part, but we’ve made progress and will keep pushing to improve.”
Writer’s View
Adams’ candid assessment reflects the urgency of Morecambe’s situation. With two critical matches this week, the Shrimps need to rediscover their resilience and focus quickly. The Vertu Trophy tie offers an opportunity to regain confidence before the trip to Cheltenham. For Morecambe to turn their season around, Adams’ players must embrace accountability and deliver consistent performances in the weeks ahead.
