Reading Legend ‘Obvious’ Contender To Replace Ruben Selles

Reading FC legend Noel Hunt is emerging as a strong contender to replace Ruben Selles, with many considering him the ‘likely and obvious’ choice for the role.

According to TalkSPORT, Hunt’s history with the club, along with his recent managerial success with the Under-21s, makes him a natural fit for the vacancy left by Selles, who is set to join Championship side Hull City.

Hunt’s Successful Under-21s Tenure

Hunt, 41, enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Reading, making over 150 appearances and winning the Championship in 2012. Following his retirement, he quickly became an influential figure in the club’s coaching setup. After Selles’ appointment, Hunt worked alongside the coaching staff, establishing himself as a key part of the Royals’ plans.

Before Selles arrived, Hunt had a brief spell as interim manager following the sacking of Paul Ince. Although his tenure saw a tough run of results—two draws and three losses—Reading were relegated to the third tier. Despite this, Hunt’s efforts were not overlooked, and his leadership of the Under-21s has been lauded.

Hunt’s understanding of the club’s ethos and players’ strengths gives him an advantage in the eyes of many fans and pundits. As Alex Crook of TalkSPORT pointed out, Hunt’s close working relationship with many of the first-team squad, many of whom have come through the youth system, makes him an obvious candidate for the role.

“Noel Hunt is a likely and obvious contender to replace Selles. Has worked with a lot of their players as under-23 boss and has the backing of the dressing room. Tough gig as funds will be almost non-existent in January and they are expected to have to sell players.”

Challenges Ahead for the New Manager

However, the task awaiting Hunt will not be easy. With Reading struggling financially, the new manager will have to operate with limited resources. Reports suggest that the club will be forced to sell players in January, making it a challenging situation for Hunt if he takes over. Despite these obstacles, his experience and familiarity with the squad make him a compelling option for Reading as they look to turn their fortunes around.
