Northampton Town Manager Search Takes Twist: Non-League Man In Frame

Robbie Savage is reportedly under consideration for the vacant manager’s position at Northampton Town, according to sources close to the club.

The Cobblers have been impressed with Savage’s managerial achievements at Macclesfield Town, where he has led the club to the top of the Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football.

Coaching at Macclesfield Town

Savage, a former Wales international, has been a prominent figure in football since retiring as a player in 2011. His coaching career began with Macclesfield, where he initially joined as a board member and director of football in October 2020. He was appointed as the club’s manager in the off-season, marking his first role in football management. Under his guidance, Macclesfield have performed exceptionally well, sitting 15 points clear at the top of the league, having lost just one of their 18 games in the 2024-25 season.

Northampton Town find themselves in need of a new manager following Jon Brady’s resignation on December 5. Brady had been in charge for over three years but left the club with the team struggling in 21st place in League One. Assistant manager Ian Sampson has been placed in interim charge for their upcoming match against Peterborough United on December 9.

Robbie Savage

Robbie Savage enjoyed a robust playing career as a midfielder, known for his tenacity and work rate. Starting at Manchester United’s academy, he found success at Crewe Alexandra before making his mark in the Premier League with Leicester City, winning the League Cup in 2000. He later played for Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, and Derby County, earning a reputation as a combative and controversial figure on the pitch.

Savage, who earned 346 Premier League appearances and 39 caps for Wales during his playing career, has turned down several lucrative offers to manage other clubs in recent months. However, Northampton Town could now move to tempt him away from Macclesfield, potentially offering him the chance to manage in the higher divisions of English football.
