Colchester United Boss Makes ‘Work In Progress’ Admission Ahead Of Notts County Clash

Colchester United manager insists there is still work to be done at the football club despite the upturn in his side’s form over the past month, as reported by the Gazette.

Cowley’s side are looking for a seventh game without defeat in all competitions when they take on Notts County tomorrow.

Upturn In Form

Since his appointment, Cowley has made Colchester United hard to beat but has found winning hard to come by. In his 44 games in charge, 19 have ended in stalemate and only 11 in victories for The U’s.

Two league wins in the last three and three in six in all competitions appear to be the shoots of a more positive run for the Essex but Cowley is not getting carried away.

The former Lincoln City boss insists there is still plenty of work to be done to get the club to where they want to be.

“We’re still very much a work in progress and we’re nowhere near the finished article or the team that we want to be.”

“We’re proud of the group, because we had a really difficult period and we navigated through that; it’s credit to them.”

“We’re six unbeaten and we’re growing. There’s lots to be positive about but having said that, there’s still lots of work to do.”

Cowley Pleased With The Consistency

The manager spoke of his pleasure at the greater levels of consistency around the squad following a lot of upheaval in the summer and injury problems in the early stages of the league campaign.

“In terms of systems, we’ve been able to have more continuity, which has helped. That’s come from player availability really and also, you can’t underestimate the amount of change there was, in the summer.”

“We now have much more consistency in terms of system, consistency in terms of selection and I think that’s allowed the players to find a consistent level of performance.”

Looking Ahead To Notts County

Colchester are preparing for a trip to Nottinghamshire to face a Notts County side with just one win in five but Cowley is expecting a tough test.

“They ask a lot of questions of you against the ball and you have to make sure that you get your defensive organisation right and you have to make sure that you’re good with the ball.”

Writer’s View

There is more positivity surrounding The U’s but they still find themselves someway short of where they feel they should be. County will be a tough test but an excellent marker for where Cowley’s men are.
