Barnsley FC manager Darrell Clarke has called on his team to avoid a “victim mentality” after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Wrexham extended their winless streak to five matches.
A late strike by former Rotherham midfielder Ollie Rathbone in stoppage time sealed Barnsley’s fate at the Racecourse Ground, leaving Clarke’s side three points adrift of the League One playoff positions.
Late Heartbreak Against Wrexham
Clarke’s men were minutes away from securing a valuable point against Wrexham, one of the league’s standout teams at home. However, Rathbone’s stunning 25-yard effort with his weaker foot handed Barnsley another blow in a difficult spell that also saw them exit the FA Cup via a penalty shootout last weekend.
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Clarke reflected on the nature of the loss:
“To score a 25-yarder that beats us with his weaker foot is a real kick in the teeth. But we can’t become victims. From our perspective, we’ve got to do a lot better. It’s probably a ‘one in fifty’ shot that goes in from that range.”
Challenges Mount as Birmingham City Loom
The defeat leaves Barnsley eighth in League One, adding pressure ahead of their clash with title favourites Birmingham City on Saturday. Clarke acknowledged his players were feeling the physical toll of recent matches but insisted there’s no room for excuses.
“We didn’t look in danger of losing the game,” Clarke said. “But we weren’t aggressive enough with our forward play. We had a great chance with Fabio Jalo, but the game was tightly contested. We’ve got to stay strong and together for a massive game coming on Saturday.”
Building Resilience
Despite their recent struggles, Clarke is determined to instil resilience in his squad. He pointed out defensive lapses that led to Rathbone’s decisive goal and emphasised the need to address them ahead of their next match.
“We dive in at the top end of the pitch and get beaten too easily. Then we haven’t covered the midfield area or closed down the shot well enough. These are areas we must improve to turn things around.”
Writer’s View
Barnsley’s recent form highlights the fine margins of League One football. Darrell Clarke’s emphasis on unity and resilience is crucial as they navigate this challenging period. The upcoming clash with Birmingham City offers a significant test of character for the Reds, but with the right adjustments, they have the potential to reignite their playoff ambitions. Saturday’s game could be a defining moment in their season.
