Doncaster Rovers Boss Outlines Squad Positives After Narrow FA Cup Win

Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has shared encouraging news about defender Tom Nixon, whose hamstring injury might not be as severe as initially feared.

The 22-year-old, who has endured a challenging season with multiple setbacks, could return to action sooner than expected following a second medical opinion.

Hamstring Injury Not as Severe as Feared

Nixon, sidelined for two months earlier this season, had only just returned when he suffered another setback during a behind-closed-doors match against Rotherham. Initially expected to miss three weeks, McCann has now revealed that the injury is less serious than anticipated.

“We found Tom’s injury is classed as a 1B strain, which is nothing really, but it’s presenting a bit more than that. The medical team thinks it’s slightly worse than the scan showed, so we’re seeking a second opinion,” McCann explained.

The positive update raises hopes that Nixon could rejoin the squad soon, bolstering the team’s defensive options. His return would be timely, as Rovers continue their League Two campaign and look to build on their recent FA Cup success.

Josh Emmanuel Shines in FA Cup Victory

Rovers’ extra-time victory over Kettering in the FA Cup second round also highlighted the contributions of Josh Emmanuel. Making just his fourth appearance for the club, Emmanuel came off the bench at half-time and delivered an impressive performance.

“Josh is a very good player. He’s just had to wait for his opportunity. Fortunately, we’ve got three really good right-backs, and with Tom’s injury not as bad as we first thought, there’ll be opportunities for Josh,” McCann added.

Rovers’ win marked their first progression to the FA Cup third round in four years, a significant milestone for McCann’s squad. The team now awaits the outcome of the third-round draw, which could present them with a high-profile opponent from a higher division.

A favourable third-round draw could add further excitement and inspire a push for consistency on all fronts.
