‘Time To Go’ – Plymouth Argyle Fans Turn on Wayne Rooney

Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney is facing mounting pressure after his side suffered another heavy defeat.

This time it was a 4-0 drubbing at Bristol City, marking a dreadful week where they shipped 10 goals across two matches. With the Pilgrims winless away from home all season, Rooney’s position is under scrutiny, and fans are calling for him to resign.

Heavy Losses and Mounting Frustration

The match at Ashton Gate began as a potential turning point for Plymouth after their midweek 6-1 loss to Norwich. However, after 50 minutes of resilience, the floodgates opened when Anis Mehmeti’s deflected strike put Bristol City ahead. Mehmeti doubled the lead moments later with a precise finish before completing his brace with a stunning long-range effort. Sinclair Armstrong sealed the rout late on, leaving Plymouth languishing in 21st place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Rooney, appointed in the summer, has yet to secure an away victory, with the team’s form on the road proving a significant weakness. In addition to their latest losses, Plymouth also conceded five against Cardiff City and four at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season.

“Embarrassed really. That’s the right word to use,” Rooney admitted after the match. “After what happened on Tuesday at Norwich, we came here with a gameplan to try and be in the game, for 50 minutes we were. As soon as we concede a goal, the players out there collapse, and we look very fragile.”

Fan frustration has boiled over, with calls for Rooney to step down growing louder. One supporter voiced their anger on social media: “It’s time to go!” Another added: “He looks so lost and out of his depth. Please do the right thing.”

Rooney’s Search for Solutions

Rooney has publicly expressed his frustration at the lack of response from his players, revealing his attempts to address the team’s issues.

“I’ve tried going at the players. I’ve tried encouraging and supporting them. I’ve tried everything really, so I need to keep trying to find the right balance to fix the away performances,” he said.

Despite the dire run, the former Manchester United star remains committed to turning the team’s fortunes around. However, with fixtures piling up and relegation looming, time is running out for Plymouth to find stability.

Writer’s View

Wayne Rooney’s struggles at Plymouth highlight the challenges of transitioning from a decorated playing career to management. While his intent and tactical awareness are evident, the lack of response from the squad suggests deeper issues within the team. Unless Rooney can swiftly instil resilience and consistency, Plymouth’s Championship status could be under serious threat.
