Bolton Wanderers are gearing up for a pivotal decision regarding Aaron Morley’s future as the January transfer window approaches.
The 24-year-old midfielder, currently on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, has been instrumental in their unexpected success this season and has shown a resurgence in form since leaving the Toughsheet Stadium in September.
Morley’s Impact at Wycombe
Wycombe’s strong start to the League One campaign owes much to Morley’s contributions in midfield. Sent out to regain confidence and rediscover the form he displayed 18 months ago, the former Rochdale playmaker has done exactly that. This resurgence has increased his value, putting Bolton in a strong position to assess their next steps.
“We wanted him to go out, build confidence and get back to where we believe he was 18 months ago. It looks like he is getting there, which is great for us,” said Bolton head coach Ian Evatt.
Despite Wycombe sitting above Bolton in the League One standings, Evatt emphasised that the ultimate decision would focus on what benefits Bolton Wanderers in the long term.
Three Possible Outcomes
Bolton’s options include recalling Morley to strengthen their midfield, allowing him to remain on loan at Wycombe, or exploring a permanent transfer. Evatt acknowledged that while player input is considered, the final decision rests with the club:
“When you sign a contract, you are happy to sign it, so the club makes the decision… It will be our call – and we will make the right one for us, whatever that may be.”
Bolton’s current midfield options include Josh Sheehan, George Thomason, Jay Matete, Scott Arfield, and Klaidi Lolos, with Kyle Dempsey expected to return from injury soon. However, Evatt hinted that a more attack-minded midfielder could be on the shopping list in January to enhance the squad’s depth.
Strengthening in January
Bolton have faced challenges in central positions due to injuries and player adaptability. Evatt noted that while Morley could fill a gap, further reinforcement might still be necessary.
“We are probably one down in midfield at the moment,” he said, highlighting the need for additional options as Bolton push for promotion from League One.
Writer’s View
Aaron Morley’s success at Wycombe has created a positive dilemma for Bolton Wanderers. While recalling him could bolster the squad, allowing him to continue thriving on loan might prove more beneficial in the long term. With January reinforcements on the horizon, how Bolton balance their immediate needs against future planning will be critical in their pursuit of promotion.
