Walsall manager Mat Sadler has shared a positive update on defender Harry Williams, confirming the 22-year-old is ready to return following a careful recovery process.
Williams, who suffered a concussion during Walsall’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers earlier this month, has not featured in the last two matchday squads but is now fit for selection.
The defender sustained the injury after a collision with advertising hoardings, which required a hospital visit and sidelined him for two games prior to the international break. Having resumed full training at Essington last week, Williams has impressed Sadler with his recovery and readiness to compete again.
Sadler Praises Williams’ Progress
Sadler admitted to adopting a cautious approach to Williams’ return, prioritising the player’s long-term health. The manager expressed confidence in the defender’s readiness following a standout training session earlier this week.
“He’s back into the swing of things training-wise,” Sadler said. “I’ve been a little bit cautious with him if I’m honest because I wanted to make sure he was fully OK. He did a session yesterday where I was like, yes, you’re back. That was probably the first time where I thought he is kind of over it now.”
Williams’ return comes at a crucial time as Walsall prepare to face League One side Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup second round at Bescot Stadium on Saturday. Sadler indicated that Williams would be among the options considered for selection, bolstering a defence that has faced challenges this season.
The young centre-back has enjoyed a breakout season, stepping into a starting role following Oisin McEntee’s injury earlier in the campaign. Despite missing a significant portion of last season due to a hip flexor issue, Williams has made 16 appearances in all competitions this term, even scoring his first goal for the club in October.
