Peterborough United Captain Set for High-Stakes Return in Local Derby

Peterborough United’s manager, Darren Ferguson, has confirmed that club captain Hector Kyprianou is set to make his return in the fiercely competitive League One derby against Northampton Town on 9 December.

The midfielder has been sidelined since 10 October due to a hamstring injury sustained during a 3-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic. The 23-year-old Cyprus international has resumed first-team training but won’t feature in the upcoming FA Cup clash against Notts County or the league fixture against Burton Albion. Ferguson has opted to err on the side of caution to ensure Kyprianou’s full fitness for the derby.

Ferguson Confident in Midfield Depth

Ferguson acknowledged the value of Kyprianou’s return but highlighted the strong performances of Donay O’Brien-Brady and Ryan De Havilland, who have stepped up in the skipper’s absence. Archie Collins, a consistent presence in midfield, also received praise for his contributions despite missing the Rotherham match.

“I asked the question re Hector playing against Burton,” Ferguson admitted. “But I don’t really want to take any chances with him. He is looking strong in training though and he will be ready to play at Northampton, and I mean ready to play from the start. We’ve missed Hector, but we also haven’t missed him if you see what I mean.”

Ferguson emphasised the importance of Kyprianou’s role as a key player for the team, describing him as “exceptional for League One.” The manager’s strategy aims to balance squad rotation while preparing for the crucial local derby at Northampton’s Sixfields Stadium.

In related news, Peterborough’s midfield options could see a further boost in January with the potential return of on-loan Manchester City prospect Mohamadou Susoho, currently recovering from a thigh injury.

Meanwhile, Ferguson has confirmed that Jadel Katongo, another loanee from Manchester City, will start the FA Cup fixture, marking his first appearance since September.

Kyprianou’s return couldn’t come at a better time for Peterborough United as they prepare for a critical local derby. While the skipper’s absence has been managed well, his experience and quality will be invaluable in a high-pressure environment. Ferguson’s cautious approach reflects a long-term view, ensuring Kyprianou is fully fit for what could be a defining moment in the season. Fans will hope his comeback ignites a strong push towards promotion.
