‘Nowhere Near Good Enough’ – Plymouth Argyle Boss Makes Honest Admission

Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney did not shy away from criticism following his team’s resounding 6-1 defeat to Norwich City in the Championship.

The former Manchester United star admitted his side was well below par as they endured another heavy away loss this season.

Argyle Struggles on the Road

Norwich took control early in the match, with Borja Sainz opening the scoring within two minutes despite offside appeals from the Plymouth defence. Sainz’s hat-trick was the highlight of a dominant display from the home side, marking a difficult evening for the visitors. Despite Mustapha Bundu pulling a goal back before half-time, Plymouth could not mount a comeback.

The Canaries resumed their dominance after the break, with Shane Duffy heading in a goal from a corner and Sainz completing his treble with a skilful finish. Substitute strikes from Anis Ben Slimane and Ante Crnac capped off a comprehensive victory for Norwich.

Rooney did not mince his words when addressing his team’s performance. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, he ripped into his side, who are now perilously close to the bottom three, and a potential relegation battle.

“We were nowhere near good enough. We’re down to the bare bones with injuries, but that’s no excuse. We were fortunate to be only 2-1 down at half-time. You then hope for a reaction in the second half, but once they made it 3-1, I thought we went under, which is very disappointing. The players just didn’t look like they thought they could get back in it.”

Rooney also expressed sympathy for the travelling supporters, acknowledging their disappointment in the team’s lacklustre display. He emphasised the need to improve Plymouth’s away form, which has been a persistent issue this season.

“I just feel sorry for the fans who have come all this way they will be not be pleased with what they have seen tonight.”

Writer’s View

Wayne Rooney’s frustrations are understandable, as Plymouth’s away performances continue to fall short of expectations. While injuries have undoubtedly hindered the squad, their lack of resilience after conceding remains a glaring concern. As Plymouth seek answers, fans will hope for a swift response in upcoming fixtures to prevent their campaign from losing momentum.
