Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt has commended Dion Charles for his determined reaction following a challenging spell in front of goal.
Although the striker was controversially denied a crucial goal during Saturday’s victory over Blackpool, Evatt believes Charles showcased the qualities that make him a key player for the team.
A Return to Form
Charles entered the Blackpool clash with only one goal in his previous eight appearances, prompting Evatt to challenge him to rediscover his best form. The Northern Ireland international appeared to rise to the occasion, delivering a dynamic performance that troubled the opposition’s defence throughout the game.
“I asked for a big performance from him, and I thought he gave us one,” Evatt said. “He was back to his best — a pest, a nuisance — and caused them problems, especially with those balls in behind.”
While Charles found the net with a sharp finish into the bottom corner during the second half, the goal was disallowed due to a controversial offside decision. Evatt later admitted confusion over the ruling after reviewing the footage.
Bolton’s Persistence Pays Off
Despite the disallowed goal, Bolton displayed resilience, securing a late winner through Aaron Morley after an intelligent build-up involving Nathan Baxter, Jay Matete, and Szabolcs Schön. Evatt highlighted the composure shown by his team in the decisive moment, praising their ability to avoid panic and execute their strategy under pressure.
On Charles’s disallowed effort, Evatt added: “I’ve watched it a lot… The linesman’s flag went up after the ball went in. It was a very strange decision. I don’t think any of their players even appealed.”
Looking Ahead
Bolton’s victory over Blackpool keeps them well-positioned in League One as they continue their push for promotion. Evatt’s open communication with Charles and the squad underscores his commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring players respond positively to challenges.

As Bolton strive for promotion, maintaining this synergy between coach and squad will be pivotal in navigating the demands of the season.
