Sunderland Manager Sends Stars ‘Stay Put’ Message

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has encouraged rising stars Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham to prioritise their development at the club, despite growing interest from elite European teams.

The duo’s performances this season have attracted attention, but Le Bris believes remaining with Sunderland will best serve their careers for now.

A Development Focus Amid Transfer Speculation

Both Rigg, 17, and Bellingham, 19, have established themselves as key players in Sunderland’s squad. Their impact in the Championship has not gone unnoticed, with Rigg linked to Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Brentford, while Bellingham has been touted for a potential move to Borussia Dortmund, following in the footsteps of his older brother Jude.

Le Bris, however, insists the pair are thriving in Sunderland’s environment and should stay until they are ready for the next step. Speaking about their development, he expressed confidence in the club’s ability to provide the right conditions for growth.

“I think with these players, they are involved in the project, and they know that they can improve in this team,” said Le Bris. “It is rare to have this. Sometimes, you can go a whole career without having these elements – where you are in a club, you like that club, you are improving, and you believe in a very interesting journey.”

Le Bris added that both Rigg and Bellingham are still in the “right zone” for development, with opportunities to play and learn in a collective style that aligns with Sunderland’s culture. He stressed that leaving prematurely could disrupt their upward trajectory.

Guidance from Experience

With a background in youth development at Rennes and Lorient, Le Bris is well-versed in nurturing young talent. He recognises the lure of bigger clubs and financial incentives but maintains that career progression should take precedence. Sunderland’s manager also acknowledged the challenges posed by external influences on young players’ decisions.

While Bellingham has been away with England Under-21s, Le Bris has worked closely with Rigg at Sunderland’s Academy of Light. With injuries affecting the squad, Rigg may take on a deeper midfield role in the upcoming game against Millwall, showcasing his adaptability.

Writer’s View

Le Bris’ comments underscore the delicate balance young players face between ambition and development. Sunderland provides a stable environment where Rigg and Bellingham can hone their skills, but external pressures could sway their paths. Staying grounded at this stage could ensure they are fully prepared for the challenges of elite-level football when the time comes.
