Lincoln City Suffer Departure: Former Cambridge United Man Moves On

Lincoln City have announced that former Cambridge United man David Bridges has left the club to pursue other opportunities.

Bridges, who has previously been with the Imps between 2018 and 2020, joined the club on August 2nd as assistant head coach to Michael Skubala. However, his tenure at the club has now come to an end.

Lincoln City Statement

The Imps put out a statement last night, thanking the 42-year-old for his services.

“David Bridges has left his role as assistant head coach at the Imps to explore other opportunities within football.

“Bridges returned to the club this summer after a spell with the Professional Footballers Association, having previously been head of coaching in City’s Academy. David leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club.”

The Chris Cohen Angle

The situation has been one Imps fans have been looking to have resolved, after Chris Cohen returned to the club. The former Nottingham Forest man has had two spells with the Imps, one in the interim period before Michael Akubala’s appointment, and again in January of this year. He left for Stoke City in the summer, but was a victim of Steven Schumacher’s dismissal.

He returned to the Imps at the end of October, at the same time Bridges became absent from the Imps’ dugout. The official line was that he was away on a personal matter, which was pre-arranged when he joined the club.

Who is David Bridges?

Bridges began his coaching journey while still an active player at Kettering Town, stepping in to lead training sessions in January 2012 during a period when the club lacked a first-team manager. His commitment to coaching development saw him earn his UEFA B Licence while playing for King’s Lynn Town, where he was appointed first-team coach in February 2015.

In May 2017, Bridges transitioned into his first dedicated coaching role, joining St Neots Town as first-team coach in the Southern League Premier Division. His progress continued when, in August 2018, he left St Neots to become head of coaching at League Two side Lincoln City. Bridges spent over two years at Lincoln, contributing to the club’s development before moving into a broader role as a coach educator with the Professional Footballers’ Association in February 2021.

Writer’s View

Just a few months after rejoining the club as assistant head coach, David Bridges’ departure from Lincoln City marks an unexpected twist in the Imps’ coaching dynamics. The timing of Chris Cohen’s return to the club adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. This overlap may lead some fans to speculate about internal adjustments and shifting priorities within the coaching team
