Cambridge United goalkeeper Jack Stevens has shared his experience of a challenging period out of the team under head coach Garry Monk.
Having arrived as the club’s first-choice keeper in 2023, Stevens was sidelined through injury and found himself behind Vicente Reyes in the pecking order this season.
Stevens’ Journey Back to the XI
On Saturday, Stevens returned to the starting line-up for the first time since March in a 1-1 League One draw with Barnsley, stepping in while Reyes was away on international duty. The 26-year-old made a strong impression, delivering several key saves to secure a vital point for Cambridge.
“There’s no hiding that it’s been a tough couple of months for me, but I’m experienced and big enough to know that these things happen. I’ve just kept my head down, worked as hard as possible and I know that the good times will roll back around eventually – hopefully this is the start of it.”
Stevens credited the support of his teammates and coaching staff for helping him navigate the difficult period, adding that he remains focused on seizing his opportunities as they come.
A Career of Resilience
Stevens’ journey in football has been one of perseverance. Starting his youth career at Chelsea, Barnet, and Reading, he overcame early setbacks to sign his first professional contract with Oxford United in 2016. Over the years, he has gained experience on loan at clubs such as Tamworth, Port Vale, and Cirencester Town, eventually establishing himself as a reliable goalkeeper.
Stevens joined Cambridge United in June 2023 and quickly became their first-choice keeper. However, injuries disrupted his progress, forcing him to fight for his place in a competitive squad.
What Lies Ahead?
Saturday’s performance against Barnsley may mark the start of a redemption arc for Stevens, who is determined to regain his status as Cambridge United’s number one. With Cambridge currently fighting to climb the League One table, his experience and determination could prove invaluable in the coming months.
