Coventry City have ramped up talks with Frank Lampard as they look to bring their managerial search to an end, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The former Chelsea boss has been the favourite to land the position since the Sky Blues took the shock decision to part company with Mark Robins earlier this month. The 54-year-old was a fan favourite at the CBS Arena having guided the club from League Two to the brink of the Premier League as well as coming within a whisker of reaching the FA Cup final last season.
Despite the heroics, Coventry have begun this season slowly. Interim manager Rhys Carr took charge of the clash with league leaders Sunderland, picking up a valuable point. However, they still sit 17th in the Championship, one point above the bottom three.
Frank Lampard Talks ‘Advanced’
With the international break almost behind us, the West Midlanders are seemingly looking to make an appointment before they host promotion hopefuls Sheffield United on Saturday. It is believed that Lee Carsley and Ruud van Nistelrooy were in the running, although developments over the weekend look to have brought that interest to an end.
The FA released a statement following England’s 5-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last night confirming Carsley will return to the under-21 setup after leading the senior team over the last few months. Meanwhile, it has been claimed that van Nistelrooy has cooled his interest in the job and instead is keen to wait for a job in the Premier League.
Therefore, Lampard looks to be nailed on, with Plettenberg stating talks are in an advanced stage and are pushing to strike a deal with immediate effect.
Writer’s View
It’s unclear how Lampard’s appointment will be met by Coventry fans. He isn’t a manager with a glowing track record and his most recent spells at Everton and Chelsea were a major disappointment. It’s fair to say that whoever replaced Robins was always going to have a taks on their hands to get the supporters on side and he will need to hit the ground running. In Lampard’s defence, he has managed in the Championship before with Derby County, where he lost in the play-off final against Aston Villa in 2019.
