Charlton Athletic continued their impressive run in the Bristol Street Motors Southern Group C with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bromley.
Miles Leaburn’s fourth goal in as many games secured the Addicks’ spot at the top of the group, though the match was not without its memorable moments, including a surprising red card for Charlton manager Nathan Jones.
Manager Jones Sent Off in First Half Drama
In a first half that lacked scoring chances, the highlight came from an unexpected incident involving Charlton’s manager, Nathan Jones. Just before half-time, Jones was sent off after referee Ben Atkinson determined he had interfered with play by stepping onto the pitch and making contact with the ball. This rare dismissal added an unusual twist to what was otherwise a tightly contested opening half.
Leaburn’s Impact and the Game-Winning Goal
After a quiet first half, Charlton switched tactics during the break, bringing on Leaburn for Terry Taylor and shifting from a 3-4-2-1 to a 3-5-2 formation. The change paid off, as Leaburn’s presence immediately troubled Bromley’s defence. In the 70th minute, captain Conor Coventry battled for possession in midfield and fed substitute Greg Docherty, who expertly set up Leaburn just outside the box. With a deft touch, Leaburn fired a deflected shot past Long, breaking the deadlock and giving Charlton the lead.
From there, Charlton seized control. Rarmani Edmonds-Green nearly doubled the lead, heading over from a cross by Gassan Ahadme, while Enslin continued to push forward, only to be denied again by Long after a clever one-two with Leaburn.
Strong Defensive Display Seals Victory
Despite a late counter from Bromley’s Levi Amantchi, whose low shot was well saved by Maynard-Brewer, Charlton’s defence held firm to secure the win. A late free kick from Docherty that sailed over the bar marked Charlton’s last opportunity, but by then the Addicks had effectively sealed their spot at the top of the group.
Writer’s View
Charlton’s victory showcased the team’s adaptability and depth, with Jones’ tactical shift proving decisive in the second half. The debut of academy star Kai Enslin highlights Charlton’s commitment to nurturing young talent, and Leaburn’s continued scoring form gives the Addicks a strong attacking presence as they progress in the competition. If they can maintain this form, Charlton could be a formidable contender in the later stages.
