Salford City Head Coach Full Of Praise Despite Defeat

Salford City head coach Karl Robinson was pleased with his side’s performance despite suffering a late defeat against Carlisle United.

The Ammies entered the game as heavy favourites having embarked on a four-game unbeaten run which had seen them rise up to mid table in League Two. They were expected to extend that run against a Carlisle United struggling at the wrong end of the table and having not recorded a win since September.

Salford were the better of the two teams throughout but found it difficult to break down the Cumbrians. Carlisle then sprung a shock when Ben Barclay netted the winner with just two minutes remaining.

Robinson Happy Despite Result

Following the game, Karl Robinson stated that he believed that the performance was one of the most fluid he had seen since taking over in January. Speaking to official club media, he said:

“I thought our play was some of the most fluid I’ve seen but we didn’t take our chances. I think what’s happened then is that not only the players, but the fans start losing that hope of where is the goal going to come from, because of some of our build up play and some of the opportunities we created.

“We started the first five minutes of the second half really well. I thought we were on the front foot again, but the game fizzled out and the energy went out of the game, and once the energy went, we lost that fluidity and that ability to land on things.

“You look at yourself first and accept responsibility for the things you’ve done wrong, and you take responsibility for things we’ve done collectively, and you become better as a consequence of that.

“We need to build on the positivity as well and make sure in forthcoming games we become more ruthless in the final third, I’ve not seen that all season yet and that is something we have got to find.”

Writer’s View

Salford have struggled for consistency this season but have looked a lot better in recent weeks. They would’ve hoped to have taken that momentum into this afternoon’s clash and extended their unbeaten run against one of League Two’s worst teams. They did play some nice football at times but as the game wore on, they looked to settle for a point. It was a smash-and-grab win for Carlisle and with a tough trip to Doncaster on the horizon, Robinson may be left ruing a missed opportunity.
