Millwall Midfielder Makes Contract Revelation

Millwall midfielder George Honeyman has expressed his desire to remain at The Den, but the experienced 30-year-old isn’t overly concerned about his contract, which expires at the end of June.

Having been a reliable part of Neil Harris’ squad, the former Sunderland and Hull City player is happy to wait for the club to initiate discussions.

Honeyman’s Millwall Commitment

Honeyman’s commitment to Millwall is evident, as he explained to the South London Press.

“Yeah – definitely. I really enjoy it here. We’ve got a great dressing room and fantastic staff to support us on and off the pitch. My wife-to-be is settled down here in work. So it would definitely be easier. You look at the age of players that are coming into the football club, I may not fit the model for them any more. I don’t know…I’m purely guessing here.”

Having joined Millwall from Hull City in 2019 for around £600,000, Honeyman has become a mainstay in the squad. But despite his value, he admits there have been no formal talks yet.

“It’s only November, so I’m pretty relaxed about it – as relaxed as you can be,” he remarked. His focus, he says, is to keep performing well for the team, noting, “Ultimately if I play well and help the team win, then it is good for both parties.”

Honeyman’s Key Role

Honeyman’s contributions extend beyond experience; his playmaking and defensive efforts make him a standout for Millwall. Statistically, he leads the team in big chances and chances created, ranks second for expected goals (xG), and is also second in successful tackles. When asked if he tracks these numbers, Honeyman said he doesn’t actively monitor them but appreciates the feedback.

For Honeyman, the team’s success comes first. Following Millwall’s 1-0 win at Swansea, in which he was subbed out for Casper De Norre – who then scored the winning goal – Honeyman’s response reflected his team-oriented attitude. “Brilliant. I was absolutely buzzing,” he said, celebrating his teammate’s impact on the pitch.

Writer’s View

Honeyman’s relaxed stance on his contract mirrors his pragmatic outlook on football. While his stats and attitude are invaluable to Millwall, his age could influence the club’s decision on renewal. As he continues to perform, both he and the club will benefit, whether his future remains at The Den or beyond.
