Former Manchester United Man Praised For Exeter City Return

Exeter City’s Demi Mitchell has delighted fans and coaching staff alike with his return to action, as manager Gary Caldwell praised the club’s medical team for their hard work in helping the forward make his comeback.

Mitchell, who suffered a severe knee injury in last year’s Carabao Cup, has already made an impact since his return, scoring in Exeter’s 3-2 EFL Trophy victory over Bristol Rovers and winning a penalty in their recent FA Cup thriller against Barnet.

Mitchell’s injury had sidelined him for nearly a year, but his recent performances have showcased his sharpness and versatility on the field. Caldwell acknowledged the efforts of the club’s medical and sports science teams, highlighting how they helped Mitchell regain his fitness.

“He’s been brilliant and that’s why we were desperate to keep him at the club, even though he had a long-term injury,” Caldwell said. “We believe in Demi, he’s a fantastic player, great character around the place.”

Increasing Depth and Options on the Wings

Mitchell’s return is timely for the Grecians, who have been experimenting with their formation due to player injuries and absences. The resurgence of Ilmari Niskanen, who Caldwell praised for his adaptability in playing on the left despite being a natural right-sided player, has added new possibilities. With Mitchell fit to play on the left and Niskanen able to return to his natural position, Exeter now boasts an exciting combination of pace and skill on the wings.

Additionally, Caldwell has welcomed back a few other key players, including Vinnie Harper and Caleb Watts, both of whom have recovered from recent knocks. This bolstered lineup allows Exeter to deploy players in their preferred positions, enhancing the team’s overall balance.

The squad’s depth also means that Leicester City loanee Amani Richards, who has been battling both injury and competition for his place, has not seen game time since early October.

“He’s been training, he had a little niggle a few weeks back which kind of set him back, but he’s been full training,” Caldwell explained. “It shows the level of competition we now have in the squad that he’s not making squads.”

Writer’s View

Exeter City fans will be eagerly watching how Mitchell’s reintegration impacts the team’s dynamic as they prepare for their next League One match against Charlton Athletic. With more options across the field, the Grecians appear primed for a strong finish to the season, buoyed by the healthy competition within the squad.
