Burnley manager Scott Parker has shared candid insights on Luca Koleosho’s role, admitting that he sees the 20-year-old as most effective on the left wing.
This comes despite having utilised him predominantly on the right side this season. Koleosho, who impressed last year under former manager Vincent Kompany on the left, has been positioned on the opposite side in Burnley’s current Championship campaign, sparking mixed reactions from fans and raising questions about his optimal placement.
Parker’s Tactical Adjustments and Challenges
Parker’s tactical decision to place Koleosho on the right wing has largely been a response to the club’s ongoing injury issues. With key players sidelined and limited options for his attacking lineup, Parker has been forced to adjust his squad’s setup in ways he might not have preferred.
“Probably not, no. I see him as a left-sided midfielder,” Parker explained when asked if Koleosho is at his best on the right. “Due to current dynamics of the squad and where we are, due to injuries, Jaidon as well—he’s on two goals and two assists—he’s built up that relationship there… Luca probably is better coming off the left, I do see that. But where we currently are, he’s in that position, which he can play by the way.”
Despite being on the right, Koleosho has been doing his best to adapt, Parker added. The shift has pushed Koleosho to play outside his comfort zone, attacking from the flanks in a manner that does not fully leverage his left-wing strengths. Yet, the Burnley boss remains optimistic about the young player’s adaptability and resilience.
Exploring Options Amid Injuries
In addition to Koleosho’s switch, Parker has considered other squad rotations to compensate for unavailable players. Left-wing options Jaidon Anthony and Jeremy Sarmiento, both of whom Parker has rotated in the lineup, offer versatility but have also faced interruptions. Sarmiento’s two international breaks and a recent injury have limited his availability, further complicating Parker’s choices. However, Sarmiento’s return provides a potential solution to realign Koleosho to his favoured left position.
Writer’s View
Burnley’s injury woes have undeniably placed Parker in a challenging position, forcing tactical improvisation with a thin attacking lineup. While Koleosho’s potential is apparent, his position on the right limits his effectiveness and creativity. As more players regain fitness, Parker may finally have the opportunity to test a more balanced approach, enabling Koleosho to play to his full potential on the left.
