Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has confirmed the club are still hoping to convince key duo Kwame Poku and Hector Kyprianou to commit to new deals.
Both players will see their existing contracts expire at the end of the season, putting Posh in a precarious situation. Although the club would receive compensation for Poku should he leave for free, the same cannot be said for Kyprianou as he would be 24-years-old at the expiration of his current deal.
It’s been a poor start to the campaign for the Cambridgeshire outfit. After reaching the play-offs in the past two seasons, they have struggled this time around and currently sit 13th in League One. However, they are only four points off the top six and know that things in this division can change quickly.
With Poku in particular in the team, they have a player capable of producing big moments. He is the league’s top scorer with seven, whilst he also has four assists to his name, bringing his total goal contributions to 11 in just 14 outings.
Transfer Speculation
The attacker has been no stranger to speculation in the past and that is set to resurface over the coming weeks. Although the transfer window doesn’t open for over two months, Blackburn Rovers are the first team to be linked with the 23-year-old.
Speaking about the situation, Ferguson explained that it is inevitable that the pair will attract attention whilst admitting that the club have to remain realistic:
“I’ve had some time off from transfer speculation,” Ferguson told The Peterborough Telegraph. “And now I guess I’m going to have two months of it again. It’s what happens at this club and I’m used to it.
“Of course we have tried to get Hector and Kwame to sign new deals and we will try again, but we have to be realistic about their situations. We would get some compensation for Kwame because of his age, but I’m not sure how much that would mean.”
Writer’s View
Peterborough are almost a victim of their own success here. Whilst in the past they have been able to generate big sales from key players, such as Harrison Burrows and Ronnie Edwards, it doesn’t always pay off.
They lost Jonson Clarke-Harris on a free in the summer after over a year of drama, whilst Josh Knight also rejected a new deal to join German side Hannover 96. Ferguson and co will be hoping to avoid a repeat here.
