Matt Taylor has spoken in support of Bristol Rovers summer signing Promise Omochere after yet another frustrating night in front of goal.
The forward, who joined for a club record fee of around £700,000 from Fleetwood Town, rattled the crossbar as The Gas secured a well-needed 1-0 victory over a Shrewsbury Town side led by an under threat Paul Hurst.
‘The Goals Will Come’
Omochere has just two goals to his name for Rovers since joining, scoring both against Cambridge United in a 2-0 victory at the end of August. He also has three assists to his name, making him the highest contributor to goals in the entire squad so far this season.
Speaking to Bristol Live following the win over Salop, Matt Taylor put forward his defence for the 24-year-old and backed his form since arriving at The Memorial Stadium.
“Where I am with Promise, I know he is work in progress. But when you naturally spend money and put a fee to a player and bring him in as a big name in terms of what the club invested in him, there’s gonna be certain levels of expectation. But he’s where I expect him to be.
“Games like tonight and the Charlton Athletic game where he causes havoc and an absolute battering ram, I think the goals will come at a certain stage. If it’s not this season, that’s okay. He’ll still do a fantastic job for the team.”

Writer’s View
Promise Omochere has done an admirable job since arriving at Bristol Rovers. Amidst the injuries to Chris Martin and Gatlin O’Donkor, he has been thrust into becoming the club’s first-choice striker and has performed fairly well so far. Whilst fans may want more goals from him, he has been their standout performer in front of goal in what has been a tough season all around for The Gas. His manager, under a lot of criticism himself due to that form, is right to stand by his forward and help him develop into a serious goal threat and make good on that record fee they gave to Fleetwood this summer.
