MK Dons Winter Transfer Policy Emerges: More Incomings Expected

MK Dons owner Fahad Al Ghanim is eager to strengthen the squad in the upcoming January transfer window, despite head coach Scott Lindsey managing an already oversized squad.

With 37 players currently available at Stadium MK, Lindsey admits the squad is far too large for a League Two side, and streamlining will be a priority in the new year.

Squad Size Presents Challenges for Lindsey

Lindsey has expressed concerns about the sheer number of players at his disposal, noting that it makes managing the team more complicated. While several departures are likely during the January window to alleviate the squad size, Lindsey has the chairman’s full backing to bring in reinforcements where necessary.

“When we get to January, we’ll see where we are,” Lindsey said. “I know the chairman is keen on adding, which I think will be good for us. The squad needs streamlining, that’s clear, and there are a lot of players in there. Whether it means adding as well as one or two going, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Despite the already bloated squad, Lindsey is also preparing for the return of several injured players, which will add to his selection dilemmas. Callum Hendry, who has been sidelined, is expected to return to training soon, giving Lindsey even more options.

“We’re looking pretty good to be fair,” Lindsey added. “Callum Hendry is not far away, he’s starting to get out on the grass again, so he’s probably a couple of weeks away from being considered. But everyone else is training.”

Jonathan Leko remains a longer-term injury concern, though Lindsey praised his attitude and presence around the club.

Writer’s View

Milton Keynes are currently 13th in League One, a position that won’t be satisfactory to their big-spending owners. Mike Williamson may not have been sacked, but he was certainly on the brink before his move to Carlisle, and the club are now hoping Lindsey can help them achieve their ultimate aim – promotion.

While Al Ghanim’s desire to strengthen the squad is a sign of ambition, the Dons must first focus on trimming the current roster. A squad of 37 players is unsustainable in League Two, and Lindsey will need to balance his desire for reinforcements with ensuring harmony in the dressing room. If managed correctly, the additions in January could provide the spark MK Dons need to push further up the table.
