Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk has responded to talk of a promotion charge following his side’s potentially vital victory over Sheffield United, as reported by Leeds Live.
The two Yorkshire heavyweights went head-to-head at Elland Road last night in a clash between two genuine promotion contenders.
Vital Three Points For Farke’s Men
Just a few short weeks ago, rumours were circulating that the Leeds United hierarchy was evaluating potential replacements for their manager.
Since the home defeat to Burnley in the middle of September, Farke’s men have picked up 11 points from 15 availableand now sit second in the Championship.
Last night’s victory against the previously undefeated Blades could prove vital in the quest to go one better than last season’s playoff heartache.
Friday’s performance was a huge step in the right direction with a dominant performance over their Yorkshire rivals.
It was the captain on the night Struijk who opened the scoring just before the 70th minute with a left-footed volley from a Joe Rothwell corner. Young Spanish forward Mateo Joseph sealed the three points in the 90th minute, to send Leeds leapfrogging above their visitors.
‘It’s Too Early’
Following his goal and all-round impressive performance, Struijk was quick to dampen any thoughts of getting carried away.
When speaking to Sky Sports, the Dutchman said,
“No, it’s way too early to start looking at the table. We just go game by game. Hopefully we win as many games as we can but the only way is up from here.”
The 25-year-old was delighted to secure the local bragging rights and the three points.
“It’s massive. We knew it was going to be very tough. They had kept six clean sheets in a row and you don’t do that unless you are solid defensively. It was a good thing that we broke them down today.”
Writer’s View
Even this early in the season, this was a huge game and a massive win for Leeds United. A defeat would have seen them six points behind the Blades and playing catch up in the race for the top two.
The Whites could be back down in fourth come 5 pm today but are well and truly in the hunt for a Premier League return.
