Coventry City captain Ben Sheaf gave a three-word answer when asked about a new contract with the club.
The 26-year-old has 18 months left on his deal in the West Midlands, having joined the club permanently from Arsenal in 2021. His latest contract was signed in March of 2023, in the midst of the Sky Blues’ promotion push that ended in heartbreak at Wembley.
Coy About A New Contract
In an interview with CoventryLive, Sheaf touched on multiple topics, but when it came to discussing if any new talks had occurred with Mark Robins’ side, his answer was concise.
“Not particularly, no.
“For me, I have only been back (from injury) for three or four games and my focus is just getting back to my best and playing my best football and starting to win games again. And if I do that then those other things take care of themselves.”
He has recently returned from an ankle ligament issue and played his first full ninety minutes of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.
Premier League Ambitions
Multiple top-flight sides were interested in The Sky Blues’ star midfielder over the summer, with interest from Luton Town extending further back to January. Both Fulham and Ipswich Town were keen on a deal, but Sheaf ultimately ended up staying at the CBS Arena.
Discussing the interest shown in him recently, he added:
“Yeah, there was stuff in it, for sure, but ultimately I am a Coventry player.
“Cov wanted me to stay so I am contracted here and once that window was closed that was it, I had to knuckle down and my full focus is on Coventry.
“Yeah, approaches were made by a few clubs but, yeah, that’s done now and there’s nothing I can do about that. All my full focus is now literally getting promoted with this club. I have a lot of love for this club and I want to take them to the Premier League, and that’s what I am going to try to do.”
Writer’s View
Ben Sheaf is a big part of Coventry’s recent successes and now is the leader in the dressing room. Whilst by no means anywhere near being the final table, City are well down the pecking order having lost big names like Callum O’Hare and Gus Hamer in recent seasons to Sheffield United. The Sky Blues do need to reach some sort of form to put themselves back in the promotion conversation.
