Barnsley goalkeeper Jackson Smith has been given the green light to extend his loan spell at Grimsby Town by another seven days.
The 23-year-old, who joined the Mariners on an emergency basis earlier this month, will now stay on to play in the League Two side’s crucial upcoming fixture against his former club, Walsall.
Smith Extends Stay at Grimsby Town
Jackson Smith, who signed for Barnsley in the summer, has been a key figure for Grimsby Town during his short-term loan. Initially brought in to cover for injured goalkeeper Jake Eastwood, Smith has already featured in important games against Gillingham, Doncaster, Salford, and Lincoln in the EFL Trophy.
With the Mariners currently sitting just outside the League Two playoff spots, Smith’s extension could prove crucial as they aim to push back into the top seven. Grimsby, currently 8th, are only trailing Bradford City on goal difference.
“I’m so excited, honestly, it’s the only way I can put it into words. When a club of this size comes in and shows their interest in you – it’s just pure excitement. I can’t wait to get out there, meet everyone, and show what I am about,” Smith said after joining Barnsley.
Smith will wear the number 31 shirt for Grimsby in his continued loan spell, and his next test comes against his former side, Walsall, this weekend.
Barnsley’s Investment in Jackson Smith
Barnsley signed Smith in the summer to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks, handing him a four-year contract with the option of an additional year. Sporting director Mladen Sormaz expressed his excitement about securing the young goalkeeper, describing him as a player who is not only a good shot-stopper but also excellent with his feet and a strong presence in the box.
Smith, who came up through the ranks at Wolverhampton Wanderers, gained valuable experience during loan spells at Kettering Town and Walsall before making the permanent move to Barnsley. His current spell at Grimsby is another chapter in his development, providing vital game time as he continues to refine his skills.
