Sheffield Wednesday are taking a closer look at Junior Donald Kamwa, an 18-year-old forward who is currently on trial with the club after being released by Bradford City.
The young attacker made a brief appearance in the Owls’ Under-21 side during their recent match against Sheffield United, which ended in a 2-1 loss at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield Wednesday Trial
Kamwa’s trial comes at a time when Sheffield Wednesday’s youth setup has been affected by injuries, forcing the club to look for additional options. Andy Holdsworth, coach of the U21s, decided to give Kamwa a chance after he became a free agent. Kamwa is eager to find a new club after his release from Bradford, and Sheffield Wednesday are offering him the opportunity to prove himself.
“He’s been released from Bradford, and at the minute we’re really low on bodies so we’ve brought him in to have a look at him,” Holdsworth explained. “Jordan Broadbent, our U16s coach, worked with Junior at Bradford, and he’s done really well in his first week… We’ll extend that and see where it goes in the next couple of weeks.”
Kamwa was the only trialist to feature in the match, with Devlan Moses scoring the Owls’ sole goal, while Sheffield United went ahead with two goals from Louie Marsh. The U21s’ next official match will be against Fleetwood Town on October 29th, but they are scheduled to play a ‘bounce’ game against Bolton Wanderers next week.
Currently, Sheffield Wednesday’s U21 team sit fourth in the Professional Development League North table, four points shy of a top-two finish that could secure a play-off spot.
Writer’s View
Kamwa’s arrival at Sheffield Wednesday comes at a crucial time for the club’s youth team, which injuries have hampered. His background at Bradford City and the early positive feedback from Holdsworth suggest he has potential. However, whether he can turn this trial into a long-term opportunity will depend on his performances in the coming weeks. This trial is not just a lifeline for Kamwa but also a timely boost for a Wednesday side aiming for a strong finish in the development league.
