Plymouth Argyle’s Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, has spoken of Morgan Whittaker’s growing influence on the team, despite the increased attention he attracts from opposing defences.
Whittaker’s versatility and his ability to adapt his game have made him an indispensable player for the Pilgrims, as seen his market value rise to around £10 million.
Key Plymouth Argyle Figure
Whittaker, a key figure in Argyle’s attack last season with 19 Championship goals, is finding new ways to impact games. Dewsnip highlighted Whittaker’s recent headed goal in the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers, suggesting that the 23-year-old is diversifying his approach to finding the back of the net.
In a conversation with Plymouth Live, Dewsnip shared his insights into Whittaker’s development and how the team’s attacking strategy has adjusted this season.
“He’s a major part of our attacking prowess. The threat hasn’t gone away. I think it has got harder for Morgan because people are aware of what he can do,” Dewsnip said. “What I would say this year is we have, I believe, more attacking options. Morgan is part of our attacking prowess, he is not the only part of that. We are really pleased Morgan is still with us. He proved his worth again for us (against Blackburn), a kind of goal Morgan rarely scores – right between the posts, in and around that second six-yard box, and a fantastic guided header into the bottom corner.”
This goal was just Whittaker’s second of the current campaign, but it came in a way that highlights his ability to adapt. Often known for his powerful left-footed shots from long range, Whittaker is beginning to find other methods of scoring, a change Dewsnip believes showcases his growing tactical awareness.
Whittaker’s future at Home Park remains a topic of speculation. In the summer, Argyle fended off bids from Burnley for the forward, but more interest is expected in January. Dewsnip sees this attention as a testament to the club’s success in developing players and remains optimistic about the future, even if departures loom.
Writer’s View
Whittaker’s ability to evolve is crucial for Plymouth Argyle’s sustained success. As teams become more aware of his threat, his willingness to adapt his game—such as adding headed goals to his repertoire—shows a maturity that bodes well for both player and club. While transfer speculation is inevitable, Argyle’s resilience in the face of such challenges could be a key factor in their Championship campaign this season.
