Lincoln City Manager Explains FA Cup Preparation Plans

Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala has expressed excitement over his team’s FA Cup first-round draw against Chesham United, highlighting the “magic” of the historic competition.

Skubala, speaking in an interview with fan site The Stacey West, emphasized the significance of the FA Cup for both lower-league teams and football fans across the country.

Skubala on the Magic of the FA Cup

As Lincoln City prepare to face Chesham United, a team playing in the National League South, Skubala is clear about the challenge ahead. Despite Lincoln being the fourth-highest-placed team in the competition, the head coach remains cautious, citing the potential for an upset in the cup’s early rounds.

Reflecting on the importance of the FA Cup, Skubala said:

“I think it’s the magic of the FA Cup. I love the different cups, but particularly the FA Cup because of its magic. The euphoria for a grassroots or lower-league team is incredible, and for a team like Chesham, they’re going to be really motivated to push through. We enjoy the competition and want to take it seriously, aiming to win and progress as far as possible.”

Skubala’s enthusiasm for the FA Cup is well-founded, as Lincoln City famously made a deep run in the 2016/17 competition, helping to fund their state-of-the-art training facility. However, Skubala knows that a non-league opponent like Chesham could pose a significant challenge, as seen in the past when Lincoln faced difficulties against teams like Chippenham.

Acknowledging the potential hurdles, Skubala added that preparing for these types of matches can be more difficult due to limited scouting data and video analysis. However, the coach assured fans that his team will be fully prepared, utilizing scouts and other resources to gather as much information as possible.

“The video data might not be as available, but we’ll prepare the same way as for a league game. Whether it’s the FA Cup or a friendly, we’ll ensure we’re ready,” he explained.

Writer’s View

Michael Skubala’s respect for the FA Cup and his cautious approach to facing Chesham United show his understanding of the potential pitfalls in early rounds. Lincoln City’s 2016/17 cup run is a reminder of the rewards a deep run can bring, and while Skubala is optimistic, he’s not taking anything for granted. This focus and preparation could be key to avoiding an upset and pushing Lincoln further in the competition.
