Sunderland’s head coach Régis Le Bris has reportedly made clear his desire for significant reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window, according to recent reports.
Le Bris, who has led the Black Cats to a strong start this season, is said to have approached the club’s hierarchy, urging them to support his ambitions for automatic promotion by securing key signings during the window.
Top of the Championship
Under the leadership of Le Bris, Sunderland are currently positioned at the top of the Championship, having won six of their first nine games, with just two losses and a draw. With the club in excellent form and a potential return to the Premier League within reach, the Frenchman is keen to bolster the squad for the crucial second half of the season.
Reports from Football Insider suggest that Le Bris has informed Sunderland’s management that significant investment in January is necessary if the team is to maintain its push for promotion. According to the report, Le Bris expects the club to be “backed heavily in the January transfer window” should Sunderland remain in contention for promotion.
“Le Bris has let it be known to Sunderland he wants to be backed heavily in the January transfer window if his side are still in promotion contention. The Frenchman is keen to give his side the best chance of securing automatic promotion if they are still in contention come January.”
Sunderland’s transfer activities are overseen by sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, who has been working closely with head of recruitment Stuart Harvey and Le Bris. Speakman, alongside the club’s ownership, including Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori, holds the final say on any potential signings.
In a recent interview, Speakman expressed satisfaction with Sunderland’s current standing but stressed the need to remain focused on their long-term goal of returning to the Premier League.
“We want to be at the top end of the table and we want to be challenging for promotion. That’s where we want to be. At the minute, we’re really pleased, but we’re not being complacent in any shape or form. We’ll continue to work diligently.”

Le Bris’ transfer demands underline his ambition to build on Sunderland’s current success. However, it also places pressure on the club’s decision-makers to meet those expectations in a notoriously unpredictable January window. If Sunderland can secure the right players, they could be in prime position for promotion, but failure to do so could risk derailing their strong start.
