Wigan Athletic Injury Agony: £315,000 Rated Player Out For Month

Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney has revealed that right-back Steven Sessegnon will be sidelined for an additional three to four weeks after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury.

Sessegnon, 24, has been out since the end of August, and this latest development delays his return further, dealing a blow to the Latics’ defensive options. Valued at £315,000 by Transfermarkt, the former Fulham man is a huge loss for Maloney’s side.

Sessegnon’s Injury Woes Continue

In a statement to Wigan Today, Maloney provided an update on Sessegnon’s condition: “Sess had a bit of a setback. We think he’s probably going to be another three or four weeks. It’s a problem with his other leg, something that happened during his rehab, very innocuous.”

Maloney explained that the setback occurred following a training session, where Sessegnon reported stiffness later in the day and into the following morning. “It’s not a major issue but, just coming off the back of the previous injury, we’ll probably just try to recondition him again,” the Wigan boss added.

Sessegnon’s importance to the squad is evident, with Maloney pointing out how valuable his style of play is to the team: “You saw what he did at Birmingham in that second half, when we were getting on top…he’s probably the only right-back we have that is really comfortable coming into that midfield position. There’s certain games where we’ll really need that, so it’s important we get him back and fully fit as quickly as possible.”

A Key Absence for Wigan

Sessegnon, who joined Wigan last year, has made 32 appearances for the club, though only three have come this season. The former England youth international has been a solid performer at League One level, and his absence leaves a gap in Wigan’s defence, especially with his ability to shift into midfield during games.

The right-back, who came through Fulham’s academy and gained experience on loan at Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle, and Charlton Athletic, will now focus on recovering fully before returning to action. Wigan will be hoping for his swift return as they head into a busy stretch of fixtures, starting with an away game at Cambridge United this weekend.

Writer’s View

Sessegnon’s injury setback is untimely for Wigan Athletic, especially given his tactical versatility. With games where his ability to transition from defence to midfield is crucial, his absence could limit Maloney’s options. However, patience in recovery will be key to ensuring Sessegnon can contribute fully upon his return, especially in a demanding League One season.
