‘You Have To Back Yourself’ – Middlesbrough Boss Ahead of West Brom Clash

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick is confident in his team’s prospects as they prepare to face league leaders West Brom tonight.

Reflecting on last season’s tough early run, Carrick shared his unwavering belief in his players, a confidence he maintains despite occasional setbacks. Last season, Middlesbrough’s early 4-2 defeat to West Brom left them with only one point from four games. The result seemed to signal a rough road ahead, with the team looking far from being promotion contenders.

However, Carrick later revealed that after the loss at the Hawthorns, he told his players he’d bet on them making the top six—showing his trust in both their ability and his methods. Although Boro narrowly missed out on a top-six finish, Carrick’s bold prediction almost came to fruition.

Now, 11 months later, Middlesbrough return to the Hawthorns in a much healthier position, sitting just two points shy of the play-off spots. Saturday’s 2-0 win against Stoke showed they have clear top six aspirations, with Ben Doak and Hayden Hackney on the scoresheet. However, it hasn’t been the easiest of starts, with recent defeats against Sunderland and Derby, but Carrick revealed that he has the utmost confidence in himself and his players.

Speaking ahead of the game, Carrick reiterated his confidence, saying, “100%, you have to back yourself.” He explained to the Northern Echo, “You have to be stubborn at times, I’m sure my missus would say I’m stubborn, but you have to have that as a head coach. You have to believe in something to back it.”

Carrick emphasised that while the team has had its share of disappointing results, including a 5-0 reverse against Stoke in the League Cup, he remains committed to the bigger picture and is determined to continue believing in his squad. “Yeah, we’ve had games where we haven’t had results but the bigger picture— and it’s easier to say that when you’ve won a game—is what we look at. The biggest thing for me—it’s OK me saying it—but the boys believe in it.”

This resilient mindset will be put to the test against a strong West Brom side, who, despite a 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, remain top of the table. Carrick acknowledged the strength of Carlos Corberán’s squad, stating: “They have a really strong team, physically, experience-wise, they have good quality. They’re a force in this league and I think they’ll be up there come the end of the season.”

Injury concerns are also a key aspect of the build-up to the match. Middlesbrough have had their share of fitness issues, with some players still returning to full form. Carrick is mindful of these challenges but is clear that injuries will not serve as an excuse. Instead, the focus remains on maintaining performance levels as they approach a critical point in the season.

West Brom, having seen their four-game winning streak come to an end, will be determined to bounce back at home. The Baggies have been impressive this campaign, and Carrick recognises the challenge ahead, but his belief in his team remains strong.

Writer’s View

Carrick’s faith in his players, despite some inconsistency in results, is a hallmark of his managerial style. His emphasis on long-term development and trust in his squad reflects a forward-thinking approach, which is crucial in a demanding league like the Championship. Carrick’s leadership, especially during testing periods, has helped Middlesbrough remain competitive.

However, Middlesbrough will need to build momentum if they are to break into the top six and challenge for promotion. West Brom presents a formidable test, and how Carrick’s side responds will offer a clear indication of their true potential this season.
