Burnley may be on the verge of losing one of their brightest talents, with Wolves, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United all keeping tabs on winger Luca Koleosho.
The highly-rated Italy U21 international, who joined the Clarets in 2023, is reportedly attracting interest from the trio of Premier League clubs, each looking to strengthen their squads. Burnley’s resolve will be tested as they fight to retain a player who has become integral to their push for promotion back to the top flight.
The Clarets secured Koleosho from Espanyol for a modest fee of £2.6 million in the summer of 2023. Despite a challenging campaign that saw Burnley relegated to the Championship, Koleosho’s individual performances stood out. He registered one goal and one assist across 15 Premier League appearances but couldn’t prevent Burnley from dropping into the second tier. His speed, dribbling ability, and flair quickly earned him admirers, especially Wolverhampton Wanderers, who made a deadline-day offer of £25 million for the winger.
Wolves’ failed attempt to bring Koleosho to Molineux came amid a summer of change for the club, including the departure of fan favourite Pedro Neto to Chelsea. Manager Gary O’Neil, eager to inject attacking flair into his squad, was keen to land the Burnley star.
Wolves, however, are not the only club eyeing the Italian winger. Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have since joined the race, impressed by Koleosho’s start to the Championship season. In his first five appearances, Koleosho has netted twice, including a stunning 70-yard run and finish to secure a win against promotion contenders Leeds United. His early-season form has cemented his status as one of the Championship’s brightest young talents and caught the eye of scouts from across the Premier League.
Newcastle’s interest, in particular, signals their ambition to add depth and youth to their wide positions as they compete domestically and in Europe. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest, still consolidating their position in the top flight, sees Koleosho as a potential long-term investment who could bring creativity to their attack. Despite the mounting interest, Burnley manager Scott Parker remains resolute in his determination to keep the winger at Turf Moor, especially given the club’s aspirations for an immediate return to the Premier League.
“There’s no denying there was that speculation there, which you’d expect for a young talent like Luca,” Parker said when asked about Koleosho’s future in an interview with the Burnley Express. “When you’re a team coming out of the Premier League, you’re always going to be vulnerable for that, and we saw that first-hand in terms of what happened here at the start of the season.”
Parker, however, expressed his admiration for the winger’s professionalism, adding, “This is a boy that stays focused, stayed on track and is reaping the rewards of that now in terms of his performances. I’ve been really impressed with him.”
Burnley, aware of the growing interest, moved quickly to secure Koleosho on a five-year contract and have reportedly set a valuation of around £40 million for any future transfer. This could ward off interest in the January transfer window, with the Clarets more likely to consider offers in the summer should they fail to secure promotion. Nevertheless, Wolves are expected to renew their pursuit, while Newcastle and Forest could also launch bids, particularly if they believe Koleosho can make an immediate impact in their respective squads.
The 20-year-old, who developed his craft at Espanyol before moving to Burnley, is viewed as a player with enormous potential, capable of flourishing at the highest level. His rapid progression in the Championship has only increased the likelihood that one of the Premier League clubs will make a formal approach in the coming months. Burnley, who are still adjusting to life in the second tier, now face a critical decision: hold on to their prized asset or cash in while his stock is rising.
Writer’s View
The interest from Wolves, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest is no surprise, given Luca Koleosho’s performances this season. His pace, technique, and composure in front of goal have turned heads, and it’s clear that Burnley have a talent on their hands who is destined for bigger things. While Wolves’ £25 million bid fell short in the summer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see offers in the region of Burnley’s £40 million valuation emerge, especially if he continues to excel in the Championship.
From Burnley’s perspective, it’s a difficult situation. On the one hand, Koleosho is vital to their hopes of bouncing back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. On the other hand, a large offer in the summer could provide financial security and allow them to reinvest in multiple areas of the squad. For now, the Clarets need to focus on retaining him for this crucial season, but it seems inevitable that the bigger clubs will come calling again.
