Chesterfield Provided With Huge Injury Boost

Chesterfield is set to welcome back Will Grigg for this weekend’s clash with Doncaster Rovers, according to the Derbyshire Times.

Grigg, the 13-cap Northern Ireland international, suffered an ankle injury during the Spireites 1-0 loss at Port Vale a fortnight ago and missed his side’s draw with Cheltenham Town last time out.

It was expected that the striker would face a lengthy spell on the sidelines but the 33-year-old has received a more positive assessment, making him available for the trip to the Eco-Power Stadium.

Paul Cook’s men have made an encouraging start to life back in the Football League following their National League title win last season. They currently occupy the 10th spot in League Two having won two and lost two of their opening seven matches.

Former Wigan Athletic man Grigg had started all six of the club’s league matches until his enforced layoff, scoring once in the 5-0 demolition of Crewe Alexandra.

The striker was a key component in Chesterfield’s domination of the National League during the previous campaign, scoring 25 goals in 38 league appearances. His performances helped the club achieve promotion, 12 points clear of second-placed Barnet, and secure a return to league football for the first time since their dismal showing in the 2017-18 season.

Grigg’s return will provide a welcome boost for manager Cook who has had to contend with the absences of his experienced strikers, Grigg and Paddy Madden, over the the past few games. The former Portsmouth boss used new signing Kane Drummond as the focal point of his attack last time out but can now welcome back his two veterans.

Receiving the news that Grigg’s injury is not as bad as first feared is a welcome boost for Chesterfield and will bring more experience to their attack.

He was prolific in the National League last season but you need to look back to 2017-18 and his spell at Wigan to find another season where he managed ten or more league goals.

Chesterfield has made a promising start to the season but will need Grigg to rediscover his Football League shooting boots to continue to be looking up the table.
