Burnley have announced the signing of 19-year-old defender Hamzat Balogun, following his departure from Championship rivals Watford.
The Clarets, who currently sit third in the table after six games, continue to look for talent to bolster their squad, even outside the transfer window. Burnley have now confirmed Balogun’s addition to their U21 side, with the defender signing a contract that runs until next summer after impressing during a trial.
Balogun, who has spent time in both Manchester United’s and Watford’s youth systems, is eager to make a breakthrough at Burnley. After being released by Watford over the summer, the youngster trialled with Burnley’s U21s and even featured in their Professional Development League win over Bristol City. Reflecting on his move, Balogun told club media, “I feel happy and I can’t wait to get going. My aim is to work my way into the team and play as much as possible.”
While much of Balogun’s game time has come at the youth level, he did gain senior experience during a loan spell with non-league side Bedford Town. Now, he hopes to further his development with Burnley’s U21 squad, with an eye on earning an extended contract beyond this season. “The team play good football and I like the patterns of play. In my position, they like to get the full-backs involved as well,” Balogun added.
Originally from Manchester, Balogun joined Manchester United at pre-academy level before progressing to Watford, where he signed his first professional contract last summer. Primarily a right-back, he brings versatility with experience across the backline, midfield, and both wings, making him a valuable addition to Burnley’s academy ranks.
