Birmingham City’s upcoming League One clash against Wrexham on Monday night is being seen by their rivals as an opportunity to recover key players and ensure they are at full strength.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has claimed the late scheduling is ‘good’ for his side, and expressed his satisfaction with the schedule. He suggests that the extra time ahead of the game at St Andrew’s will allow some of his squad to recover from recent knocks and niggles.
Wrexham, currently top of the League One table after an unbeaten start, will be looking to continue their momentum. The Welsh side claimed 13 points from their first five matches, including a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Shrewsbury Town last Saturday. With the team flying high, Parkinson took the chance to rest some of his regular starters for their Football League Trophy match against Salford City earlier this week, where they still managed a 2-1 win.
Parkinson’s decision to rotate his squad was partly driven by a desire to give some players a break, but it was also influenced by minor injuries to key players like captain James McClean and playmaker Elliot Lee. Both have been nursing niggles, and the Wrexham boss is hopeful that the extra 48 hours of recovery time will help them be fit for the challenge of facing Birmingham City, who are considered the main promotion contenders.
“It is the next league game coming up, and we have got an extra couple of days to prepare for it which I think is good for us because we have got one or two knocks,” Parkinson told the press. “George Dobson had a dead leg and needed to be rested against Salford, and Elliot Lee has got a slight problem, so a few will get huge benefit from those extra two days, and I don’t think the game needs any building up.”
For Birmingham, the match is shaping up to be a key early-season test against a high-flying Wrexham side. While Blues have had a mixed start to the season, facing a Wrexham team with extra recovery time could present a greater challenge. Parkinson added, “We just adapt the week accordingly and we have got that plan in place already as we always do as a staff. Sit down and try and get the detail and the preparation right because it is really important.”
With both sides eyeing promotion this season, the Monday night fixture could have implications beyond just the three points. Wrexham will arrive at St Andrew’s with the confidence of their early-season form, while Birmingham City will be looking to use home advantage and their own ambitions to dent their rivals’ momentum.
The good news is the game will be played in the UK – over the summer there was some suggestion the American owners wanted to take the game Stateside, but it proved to be little more than paper talk.

The extra recovery time for Wrexham undoubtedly gives them an edge ahead of the match. With key players like McClean and Lee carrying injuries, those extra 48 hours could make all the difference in terms of fielding their strongest possible lineup. Phil Parkinson’s comments suggest he is well aware of the importance of this game, not only for maintaining Wrexham’s unbeaten start but also for setting the tone in their bid for promotion.
However, this also highlights some instability on Wrexham’s part, with key injuries potentially disrupting their plans. Birmingham City can see this as an opportunity to exploit any weaknesses or lack of cohesion if Wrexham’s lineup is less than 100%. While Parkinson is attempting to downplay the disruption, the fact that this situation needs to be managed so carefully suggests there could be vulnerabilities that Birmingham will hope to capitalise on.
