Wrexham Striker Opens Season Account And Celebrates Hollywood Style

As Wrexham continue its remarkable rise through the pyramid, they gain plaudits and disdain along the way. It comes with success, and the target on their backs becomes bigger. Of course, having Hollywood star owners will always bring attention, but one player in particular basks in being the hero and villain.

Paul Mullin is perhaps the most marmite of all the League One outfits squad players. He is renowned for his goalscoring prowess, he also grabbed the spotlight this summer as a credited member of the Deadpool and Wolverine movie, which of course was fronted up by one of the club owners, Ryan Reynolds.

His first goal of the season arrived in style last night as he struck the opener in the Welsh side’s 2-1 win over Salford City in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. In his unique and somewhat typical style, he had a celebration planned that paid tribute to his new found second career of acting, as well of course homage to the one that gave him the opportunity to star on screen.

As reported in Wales Online, the now 29-year-old frontman wheeled away after another super finish, and instead of just letting his teammates join in normal congratulations, he went to a towel placed beyond the goal line took out the now infamous Deadpool mask, and preceded to put it on and strike a superhero pose.

Mullin is credited with playing “WelshPool” in the blockbuster film and has a suit with the Welsh flag. The suit now has pride of place inside the club’s stadium, with the plan to allow fans to have pictures taken with it.

This uncanny chance to display not only an original Marvel film prop but also give fans a chance to have a unique photo op was enough to prompt Reynolds to take to Instagram, where he wrote: “The @wrexham_afc season is underway. So far so good!!!! If you visit the StōK Cae Ras Stadium, you can see WELSHPOOL on display in the Centenary Club.

“Huge thanks to Marvel for not only allowing a new WELSH Deadpool Corps member in the film, but for looking the other way when the suit disappeared from set and was accidentally mounted professionally then inexplicably shipped to The Racecourse Ground in Wrexham with no regard for wrules and wregulations.

“On our visit a couple weeks back, we accidentally unveiled WelshPool in his new home at the stadium. I was as surprised as anyone to see it there,” he added. “Before folks ask, yes, @paulmullin12 has to live inside a harshly lit, airless glass box, but that’s only because he didn’t read his Deadpool & Wolverine contract very well. Particularly the parts I wrote in crayon.”

Aside from the antics of Mullin, Wrexham showed that they are the real deal again with another solid outing and a win that keeps their momentum up going into the next round of League One fixtures. They go to Birmingham City next Monday night in a game that will further test their promotion credentials.

With their most potent goalscorer in recent years getting off the mark, it will only cement the hopes of their supporters as they look for a third straight promotion.
