Hull City goalkeeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala’s future is expected to be clarified in the coming days, as the 21-year-old faces a key decision regarding his next move.
Lo-Tutala, who spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, made a significant impact during his time with the League Two side, featuring in 18 games and helping them reach the playoffs. He was a reported target for Grant McCann’s side over the summer, but a move didn’t materialise.
Hull City boss Tim Walter has confirmed that while Lo-Tutala remains part of the squad, the club is currently weighing up whether to send the French shot-stopper out on another loan spell to continue his development or keep him as part of their squad for the upcoming season.
“Good to have him and good to leave him here as he’s such a good human being and such a good keeper,” Walter told the BBC. “He needs six weeks to come in (following injury) and they we will see what the winter brings,”
“For me, I’m happy to have him over here. He’s a good human being. He’s always happy and helps everybody. He’s a good ‘keeper and we can develop him here as well.”
Lo-Tutala has yet to make a senior appearance for Hull City but has caught the eye with his performances while on loan at Stevenage and Doncaster. With the Tigers’ current goalkeeping roster already bolstered by experienced players like Pandur, it remains to be seen whether Lo-Tutala will have an opportunity to challenge for the number one spot this season.
The young goalkeeper is seen as a player with great potential, and whether he remains at Hull or moves on loan again, his development will be closely monitored. Hull City’s decision on his future will likely hinge on their recruitment for the upcoming season, as Walter has indicated that further signings in the goalkeeping department could lead to loan moves for younger players like Lo-Tutala.
Who is Thimothee Lo-Tutala?
Thimothee Lo-Tutala began his youth career with Brentford before moving to Tottenham Hotspur’s academy. Known for his athleticism and shot-stopping abilities, he made a name for himself with impressive performances in the youth leagues. Lo-Tutala joined Hull City in 2022 on a free transfer after leaving Tottenham, signing a three-year deal with the Championship side.
Though he has yet to feature in a competitive match for Hull, the French youth international has gained valuable experience during loan spells. He spent time at Stevenage, where he made seven appearances and kept three clean sheets, before moving to Doncaster Rovers in January 2024, where he helped the team to a solid finish and a playoff run.
Lo-Tutala’s international career is also notable, having represented France at various youth levels. His commanding presence in goal and ability to read the game have drawn praise, and his future looks bright, whether he stays at Hull or continues to gain experience elsewhere.
Writer’s View
Lo-Tutala is at a crucial stage in his development, and a decision on his future will be vital. Given the competition for the starting spot at Hull City, another loan move—possibly to a League One club—could be the best option to provide him with regular game time.
However, staying with Hull and learning under experienced keepers could also be beneficial for his long-term growth. An early move into the non-league wouldn’t benefit anyone, so he’s almost certain to be a Tiger for the next three months or more.
That could mean that he is no longer an option for Doncaster. They’re flying high in the table right now, and it’s unlikely they’d want to change their keeper in the winter window if they’re doing well. Their fans will be hoping, despite Lo-Tutala’s performances last season, that they don’t need to revisit this transfer.
