Wycombe Wanderers Seal Agreement With 27-Year-Old

Wycombe Wanderers have confirmed the signing of winger Fred Onyedinma following his departure from Luton Town at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old returns to Wycombe for his fourth spell with the Chairboys, signing on a free transfer after being a free agent this summer.

Onyedinma, who has previously enjoyed successful stints at Adams Park, had been on trial with Championship side Stoke City in recent weeks, but opted now surfaced in League One. The move marks a significant boost for the League One club as they look to strengthen their squad under manager Matt Bloomfield.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Bloomfield expressed his delight at Onyedinma’s return: “Fred has been one of the stand-out performers in each of his three previous spells with Wycombe and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to come back and be part of the exciting squad that we are building here.”

Bloomfield praised Onyedinma’s versatility and hard work, pointing to his experience in English football’s top leagues: “Playing Premier League football last year was the reward for the hard work he’s put in throughout his career at all four levels, and demonstrates the quality he has in a number of different positions, either as a wing-back or a winger on either side of the pitch.”

Onyedinma spent last season with Luton Town, where he was part of the squad that played in the Premier League. However, Luton’s relegation back to the Championship led to Onyedinma’s release as the Hatters restructured their squad following their drop from the top flight.

Bloomfield further highlighted Onyedinma’s decision to return to Wycombe despite other options being on the table: “He’s someone we’ve been keen to sign throughout the summer and I know there have been various options available to him, but for him to choose Wycombe Wanderers speaks volumes for the relationship he has with the club and its fans, and also his determination to help this club grow.”

Onyedinma began his professional career at Millwall, where he came through the club’s youth system and made his senior debut in 2014. He spent several years with the Lions, becoming a key part of their squad as they battled in both League One and the Championship. During his time at Millwall, he also had two loan spells with the Chairboys, where he made a strong impact and became a fan favourite.

In 2019, Onyedinma made a permanent move to Adams Park, where he played an important role in their promotion to the Championship. His versatility, playing both as a winger and wing-back, was crucial for the Chairboys as they adapted to life in the second tier. After two successful seasons with Wycombe, he moved to Luton Town in 2021, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League for the 2023-24 season. Onyedinma appeared in the Premier League, but Luton’s subsequent relegation saw him released at the end of the campaign.

Now, at 27, Onyedinma has returned to Wycombe for a fourth spell, hoping to replicate the success he has enjoyed with the club in the past.

From Wycombe’s perspective, bringing Fred Onyedinma back is a smart move. He is a versatile player who knows the club and the league inside out. His experience across multiple levels of English football, including the Premier League, will add significant value to Wycombe’s squad. Onyedinma’s ability to play as a winger or wing-back provides tactical flexibility, which is key in a long League One campaign.

For Onyedinma, this move also makes sense. He has a strong bond with the club and its fans, and he’s likely to get the consistent game time he craves. With Wycombe aiming for promotion, his leadership and quality could be just what they need to push towards the top of the table. All signs point to this being a good fit for both parties.
