Coventry City Face Championship Competition For Target

Following his release from Hull City, Coventry City are reportedly among several Championship clubs eyeing a move for Cyrus Christie, according to reports.

A report by Team Talk suggests the Sky Blues could be in a tussle with a number of clubs for the 31-year-old right-back, who began his career with Coventry. He is now a free agent and has attracted interest from multiple teams, including Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End.

Christie, who made over 100 appearances for the Sky Blues earlier in his career, is considered a potential addition to provide depth, especially given his wealth of Championship experience, which spans over 320 matches. He is seen as a possible replacement for Mark Robins’ current right-back, former Eredivisie star Milan van Ewijk. He has recently been linked with a move to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Robins’ side have had a somewhat mixed start to the 2024/25 Championship season. The first match of the campaign ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stoke City. However, they bounced back with a thrilling 3-2 home win over Oxford United, followed by a 1-1 draw away at Bristol City. Their most recent match resulted in a 1-0 defeat at home to Norwich City, putting them in 17th place in the early Championship table.

Who is Cyrus Christie?

Cyrus Christie was born in Coventry in 1992 and has the club in his veins. Beginning at the Ricoh Arena, Christie made over 100 appearances for the club before moving to Derby County in 2014, where his performances as a right-back earned him further recognition. He later joined Middlesbrough and Fulham, where he helped the latter achieve Premier League promotion in 2018. Christie also spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and Swansea City.

Internationally, Christie represents the Republic of Ireland, debuting in 2014. He has since earned over 30 caps and scored twice. Christie’s career has also involved advocacy against racism, having spoken publicly about the abuse he and his family have endured. His most recent stint was with Hull City, where he played until 2024

While it’s still early in the season, the Sky Blues hope to find more consistency as they push to improve their league position and challenge for a playoff spot. Adding a seasoned player like Christie could bolster Mark Robins’ squad as they aim to push higher in the standings and challenge for a playoff position later in the season.

However, he did have injury and form issues during the latter stages of his Tigers career, so there is still an element of risk in taking the player on. Robins needs to balance that against the possible reward and, of course, the possibility of losing him to a rival club.
