Three League Two Matches To Look Out For – Opinion

The League Two season is in full swing and has, thankfully, managed to avoid international break postponements. As we approach the fifth round of matches, we look ahead at three of the matches to keep an eye on this weekend.

So far this term, we have seen Bromley gain a historic three points away at Harrogate Town on the opening day and Chesterfield putting five past last season’s playoff final losers Crewe Alexandra. We are, however, yet to see Morecambe score a goal.

Adams Takes His Goalless Side To Cheshire

Morecambe travel to the Mornflake Stadium to take on Crewe Alexandra looking to get their season started having been defeated in their four league outings so far. Derek Adams returned for a third spell in charge of the club during the summer and the manager has put together a squad using free transfers but The Shrimps are pointless and goalless so far.

The Railwaymen fell at the final hurdle last season, losing out to Crawley Town in the playoff final and have yet to hit their straps this season. Lee Bell’s men managed to find a win at Bromley in their last league outing but find themselves 18th in League Two. The manager has been linked with a switch to League Two rivals Carlisle United this week, adding to the importance of this fixture.

Defence v Attack?

This clash between two of the early season pace setters sees the joint highest goalscorers in the league welcome the joint tightest defence to the Eco-Power Stadium as Doncaster Rovers host Gillingham.

Grant McCann’s men went on an astounding run last season, including ten wins in a row, and they have continued their impressive form with three wins from their opening four matches. They possess the league’s top scorer in Luke Molyneux and the evergreen Billy Sharp adding quality to their attacking options.

Visitors Gillingham are unbeaten in the league and haven’t conceded a goal since their opening day 4-1 victory against Carlisle. Mark Bonner’s men have shared the goals around this season, with six players scoring a goal each. The Gills are strong defensively and will be hoping the addition of players such as Bradley Dack can help propel them towards promotion.

Williamson Looking To Kick Start Season

Walsall have made an excellent start to the campaign, winning three of their opening four matches and only conceding two goals. The Saddlers will be hoping to continue that fine form as they head to MK Dons. With the experienced Jamille Matt up top and Connor Barrett already providing three assists from the right, manager Mat Sadler will be hopeful of improving on last season’s 11th-place finish.

Milton Keynes was many people’s favourites for playoff success before being humbled by Crawley Town in the semi-finals and have made a disappointing start to this season. Mike Williamson’s side have been praised for their style of football but have failed to ignite their season thus far. Last time out, they suffered a 1-0 loss on the road at Salford City and MK find themselves 19th in the table having managed only one win.
